Graduate Fellowship Incentive Programs

The Graduate School is pleased to offer two monetary national fellowship incentive award programs for currently enrolled URI graduate students: a Graduate Fellowship Application Pre-Award Incentive Program; and a Graduate Fellowship Post-Award Incentive Program. These incentive award programs are intended to encourage a culture where our students and their mentors prepare, submit, and receive competitive applications for national programs, as well as to underscore the value of these fellowships.

The total number of awards available in a fiscal year is subject to available funding. Individuals may receive one or both awards for a single eligible fellowship application. Individuals may receive a maximum of two scholarships from a Pre-Award Incentive Program per academic year.

The awarded funds will be applied towards the student’s academic bill. If the student has an academic bill balance of $0.00, Enrollment Services will disburse a refund check. Graduate students should note that scholarships such as these are generally subject to federal and state income taxes unless the payment is used for qualified tuition and required enrollment fees.

The Graduate School Executive Committee will review each application to determine eligibility. Once reviewed, applicants will receive notice of the application status.

Eligibility

Student Eligibility for Both Awards

All full-time matriculated graduate students in a graduate degree program with good standing who properly apply for and/or are awarded an approved individual fellowship funded by an extramural agency or foundation (e.g. NSF-GRFP, NIH-NRSA, NASA, etc.) that carries with it tuition funding and a stipend equal to or greater than a nine-month graduate assistantship (stipend rates listed here) are eligible to receive scholarship payments under each of the programs of $300 and/or $1,000 scholarship.

Fellowship Eligibility

Fellowship awards that begin Fall 2023 or later are eligible. For purposes of these programs, an eligible external fellowship that would receive funding under either of these programs is defined as having all of the following features:

    1. It is externally competitive;
    2. It is an individual award to support a student-directed project (please note that this renders most training grant programs ineligible for this program);
    3. It is intended by the granting agency or foundation to be the student’s sole or primary source of support during the fellowship period (usually stated clearly in the program guidelines);
    4. The fellowship period is no less than nine months in duration;

The fellowship carries with it tuition funding and a stipend equal to or greater than a nine-month graduate assistantship (stipend rates listed here)
