Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis. Candidates are nominated by their department or program and recipients must be full-time graduate students in good academic standing.
Scholarship Timeline
- February 1: Call for nominations
- March 1: Nominations due
- Early April: Scholarship winners announced
Graduate School scholarships cover individual tuition and 20 percent of graduate student fees. They do not cover health insurance. Students with Graduate School scholarships may work on campus for hourly pay, but students who do so will not be eligible for benefits associated with assistantships.

Eligibility and Terms of Scholarships
Full-time students with a tuition scholarship must carry a minimum of 9 credits per semester. Students holding full or partial graduate teaching or research assistantships during 2018-2019 are not eligible for tuition scholarships.
Nomination Submission Instructions
Nominations are limited to a maximum of three for each department or degree program that is not affiliated with a department.
To nominate a student, submit all of the required documents:
- Departmental Nomination Form for Graduate Tuition Scholarship
- Two letters of reference and supporting information. Letters may be written by any combination of referees: department chair, director of graduate studies, student’s major advisor, or other faculty. Nominees who are not yet matriculated students at URI should submit one letter of support from the department chair or a faculty member.
- Undergraduate and graduate transcripts (copied or scanned)
- Curriculum vitae (maximum of two pages)
You have the option of sending the required attachments by uploading them to the nomination form, or by sending them via email attachment to uri.gradawards@gmail.com
If you choose to send the attachments via email, in the subject line please include the type of award (Tuition Scholarship or Diversity Awards) the student’s last name, first name and ID number.
For example, “Scholarship – Smith, John – 1002XX349” or “Diversity Awards- Smith, John – 1002XX349”
Please be sure to include all necessary attachments and all back-up documentation that are requested within the nomination form.
Selection Procedure
Nominees are evaluated based on their academic promise and their merits. The criteria used by the committee to make their selections are as follows:
- Letters of reference (10 points)
- Previous academic performance (10 points)
- Other evidence of achievement (10 points)

Announcing the Winners
Awards will be announced in early April via email to the recipients with copies sent to department chairs. The initial notice of intention to award a scholarship for the Fall 2018 semester will specify that it is contingent upon the availability of budgetary resources and the recipient’s satisfactory completion of the current academic term, if relevant.
