Biography

​Andy Llaguno begins his 23rd year at his alma mater in 2020-21.  In December 2017 he was promoted to Associate Athletic Director of Health & Performance. 

Llaguno, who serves as the head athletic trainer for football and assists with all other varsity teams, is a certified Athletic Trainer by the NATA, a Strength & Conditioning Specialist by the NSCA, and a Performance Enhancement Specialist by NASM.

Llaguno joined URI in 1998 as an assistant trainer before being promoted to Associate Trainer in 2000 and Senior Associate Athletic Trainer one year later. 

Llaguno also teaches an array of kinesiology courses and has lectured at state, district, and regional conferences.  He is dedicated to the educational process of students and was instrumental in the development of the athletic training major at West Virginia.

Llaguno is Past President, Rhode Island Athletic Trainers Association, served as conference committee member, Eastern Athletic Trainers Association, and has given  presentations at the national, district, state, and community level.  

Llaguno has published five articles in the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) News Journal on varying topics of diversity and received the 2006 URI Multicultural Award in Diversity/Excellence in Leadership.  In 2007, he was presented the Professional Development Scholarship Award from RIATA/District One. 

In 2008 Llaguno was named Athletic Trainer of the Year/Division One from NATA’s College/University Athletic Training Committee and received a District Service Award by the EATA in 2009.   He also received a 2010 National Service Award by NATA for accomplishments during 15+ years of athletic training. Llaguno received the 2016 Dan Campbell NATA Award for Government/Legislation within RIATA and in 2018 recognized for Excellence in Leadership by the National Athletic Trainers Association.  

An Active member of the community, Llaguno also worked with the Rhode Island Intercollegiate Sports Medicine Advisory Committee as well as a volunteer for the R.I. Autism Walk, U.S. Scholar Games, World Scholar Games, and Special Olympics.

Prior to his arrival at URI, Llaguno spent the 1997-98 season as an Assistant Football Athletic Trainer at Penn State and worked with the football programs at West Virginia University (1995-97) and Boston College (1994-95).

His first year at Old Dominion University, Llaguno worked with the baseball, men’s basketball, field hockey, and men’s soccer programs.  During his second year in graduate school he served as a head athletic trainer at Booker T. Washington High School. 

A native of Fair Lawn, N.J., Llaguno resides in Charlestown, RI with his wife, Jenni, and their two sons – Andres and Mateo.
