Mary Filippo

Biography

Mary Filippo received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BFA from the University of Rhode Island. She has made films since 1983. Her films are concerned with the political ramifications of seemingly non-political, personal choices. Stylistically, her films are a cross between experimental and documentary film. They have been screened at the New York Film Festival, the Museum of the Moving Image, the Ann Arbor Film Festival, the Whitney Museum, the National Gallery in Washington, D.C., and the Robert Flaherty Film Seminar. Her latest film on economics education is in the collections of Cambridge University, Vassar College, the University of Cork, and many others. Mary has taught filmmaking at the Massachusetts College of Art, the University of South Florida, and Cooper Union. She is the recipient of grants from the New York State Council on the Arts, the New York Foundation for the Arts, and the Jerome Foundation, and she has received awards from the Black Maria, Ann Arbor, and Atlanta film festivals.
