Major Unity Upgrade!

We have just completed a major expansion to the URI portion of Unity. This was funded via a federal grant that we were fortunate enough to receive. Here are the details of the hardware expansion:

  • 12 Intel Xeon CPU nodes with 64 x86-cores each and 256GB memory each.
  • 6 Nvidia “Grace” CPU nodes with 144 ARM-cores (!) each and 512GB memory each in a new “arm” partition.
  • An additional Nvidia Grace-Hopper GH200 GPU node to add to the 3 available already in Unity.

With this expansion, we have added 1,600+ CPU cores — this could not have come at a better time since we have been seeing heavy demand on those resources for several weeks. Hopefully, this expansion will help ease the pressure.

An important note: You may have noted that we have just made a deep investment in Nvidia’s Grace and Grace-Hopper architecture. This is a forward-looking investment — NSF’s next-generation ACCESS supercomputing systems (for example, “Horizon”) will be using this Nvidia architecture exclusively because of its exceptionally high power efficiency. Note that these are not standard x86 nodes; they are based on ARM architecture and software will require, at least, a recompile to execute properly on these nodes. Please reach out to us if you require assistance with using these nodes.
