What Your Workout Playlist Says About You

We all have our different types of music that get us ready to workout. Maybe you strictly listen to one specific genre, or you have a great blend of a bunch of different styles. Whatever the case, everyone’s workout playlist is unique and special in its own way.

However, this will, in fact, be a roast of all the types of music you could possibly listen to while working out.

Rap

This is a pretty common genre of music to listen to while working out if you’re a college student. I have a strong feeling that your typical gym attire is a pair of high-top Converse and a self-designed, sleeves cut-off t-shirt. And, you love leg day.

Heavy Metal

Uh oh, is someone feeling a little emotional? There’s no doubt that you have your volume turned all the way up, and you’re drowning out some other thoughts that have nothing to do with the gym. That’s okay, we all workout for different reasons.

Folk/Indie

Now, I have only ever been told by one person that they listen to folk music when they are working out. I guess that’s… okay? I’m not judging, just curious how you can get excited with this genre. Maybe I’m just the type of person that needs to be fully amped up by my music to have the motivation to workout, but folk just seems very peaceful to me. You have to be a very calm and chill person if this is mainly what you listen to at the gym.

Pop Punk

You’re very individualistic and unique, and I am certain that you listened to My Chemical Romance or Blink-182 in high school. Don’t worry about it, I did too. No one remembers your Tumblr phase, I promise.

EDM/House

You definitely have set off the lunk alarm a handful of times at a Planet Fitness if you listen to EDM when you workout. How was that dry scoop of pre-workout in the parking lot earlier? In all seriousness, you probably bench as much as the Rock, and I am jealous of your work ethic.

Surf Rock

You own at least one pair of Vans. Maybe you’re even wearing them right now. I bet you have one hundred, perfectly curated playlists that you have spent days creating, and have listened to Mac Demarco within the last week. Or, some super underground band that you are certain I have never heard of.

Country

If you listen to country music when working out, you definitely workout for the pure fun of it. You’re not here for a long time, but a good one. You seem cool, I hope you have a great week. Grind on, my friend.

Pop

You either actually enjoy the upbeat and happy style of pop music, or you just don’t know what else to listen to. You’re also certainly in the cardio section, rocking out on the elliptical machines.

Rock

Photo of Led ZeppelinYou definitely were raised listening to Led Zeppelin while doing yard work with a parent. I think it’s very wholesome of you to still regularly listen to the classics now. Good vibes only with you.

No Music

If I see someone working out without headphones in, confused and scared are understatements of how I feel. Are you just comfortable with whatever random radio station is playing at the gym? Or do you enjoy deafening silence while you sweat it out? I am, in fact, intimated by this type of person. Good luck out there.

Apple Music Users

Logo for Apple MusicI bet you feel a little left out when everyone gets their Spotify Wrapped at the end of the year. It’s okay, you can admit it.

All jokes aside, everyone should listen to what they like, and what makes them feel motivated to work out. In all honesty, I’ll listen to pretty much any music under the sun at the gym, it really just depends on the day. Who am I to judge? I really can’t hear what you’re listening to anyways, so go nuts.
