Spring 1 Intramural Sports Championships

The Spring 1 session of intramural sports, featuring men’s and co-rec 5v5 basketball, men’s and co-rec futsal, and volleyball, recently concluded. The men’s futsal and volleyball championships took place on Monday the 17th, the first day of classes following spring break. The 5v5 men’s and co-rec basketball championships followed on Tuesday night. Finally, the co-rec futsal championship was held on Wednesday night to round out the intramural championships. 

Men’s Futsal Championship

No.1 seed Afronation faced No.6 seed Persia Lions in the Men’s Futsal Championship. The Persia Lions scored immediately in this game, taking a 1-0 lead. Afronation quickly responded, however, tying the game at 1 goal. Afronation would score three more goals in a row, making the score 4-1. The Persia Lions then went on to score two unanswered goals before the end of the first half, leaving the game score at 4-3. The second half was extremely competitive, both teams scored once in the half, until play was halted with eight seconds left due to an injury on the court. The Persia Lions inbounded the ball when play resumed and scored with five seconds left, sending the game to overtime tied at 5-5. Afronation successfully defended their title, securing a 6-5 victory over the Persia Lions. 

Volleyball Championship 

The No.19 seed Big Tippas faced No.1 seed Dimes Only in the Open Volleyball Championship. Big Tippas is led by their captain, Victoria Ryan, while Dimes Only is led by Donovan Francis. Dimes Only won the first set of the game 25-10. Big Tippas surged back in the second, winning the set, pushing the match to a third set. The top-seeded team held off the underdogs and won the third set 15-2, winning the match 2-1. The MVP of the game for the Dimes Only was Ger Lee. 

Co-rec Basketball Championship

The No.5 seed State of Indiana played No.2 seed Chris Paul Fan Club in the Co-rec Basketball Championship. State of Indiana took an early lead, finishing the quarter ahead, 14-8. At halftime, State of Indiana led Chris Paul Fan Club 21-18. State of Indiana was able to grow their lead in the third, leading 37-31 going into the fourth. The fourth quarter was action-packed with Will Masse leading Chris Paul Fan Club’s comeback from a nine-point deficit to keep their championship hopes alive. Despite the rally, State of Indiana held on for a thrilling 45-43 victory after Masse’s last-second shot attempt missed. Evan Houle won the MVP for State of Indiana with 14 points in the game. 


Men’s Basketball Championship 

The 5v5 Men’s Basketball Championship consisted of the No.3 seed Karl Malone’s U13s taking on No.20 seed BTA. Karl Malone’s U13’s led after the end of the first quarter, 16-14.Karl Malone’s U13s saw their lead shrink in a low-scoring second quarter, heading into halftime up 20-19.Following halftime, Karl Malone’s U13’s were able to grow their lead to five points, leading 33-28 by the end of the third quarter. A dramatic last-second steal and layup by Karl Malone’s U13s tied the game at 40, forcing overtime. The No.3 seed Karl Malone’s U13’s sealed the overtime victory, winning 44-42. Pete Kay won the MVP of the championship game for Karl Malone’s U13’s. 

Co-rec Futsal Championship

The 1 seed “ :))))) ” played the 2 seed Casamigoals in the Co-rec Futsal Championship game. Both teams entered the championship game with undefeated records. Casamigoals came out firing, scoring two early goals and later followed up with a third unanswered. Team Smiley Face would answer back, however, scoring 3 unanswered goals, tying the game 3-3. Smiley Face struck first in the second half, but was quickly responded to, with a goal from Casamigoals tying the game at four goals. Casamigoals scored the game-winning goal with a little over five minutes remaining in the second half, winning the championship game 5-4. Louis Reyes won MVP for the Casamigoals.
