Earth Slay: Salvaging our Earth

Seeking out ways to get outside, and become involved with sustainability on campus? Campus Recreation offers activities for the URI community to get involved in, while fostering a sustainable community. With initiatives such as FloURIsh Fest, outdoor yoga, and Labyrinth walks, Campus Rec advocates for students to become active in the outdoors. A key mission of ours is to enhance environmental well-being. We specifically highlight sustainability and well being during April as it is Earth Month!

Campus Rec initiated several activities to celebrate Earth Month. April 3rd was National Walk Day. With North Woods, the bike path, and our relaxing Labyrinth, we encouraged students to get outside and take advantage of these walking paths. Further, to take initiative and actively care for our environment, we are collaborating with the Outing Club. This Friday, the 18th, Campus Recreation and the Outing Club will be hosting a clean-up event at Narragansett Town Beach. After the clean up, the group will be having a sunset picnic. Join us at Town Beach to make a difference within your community. Another sustainability practice for students is our Farmers Market on the quad, which provides free fruits and veggies for the URI community. As the weather gets warmer, keep an eye out for the return of the Farmers Market and take advantage of the free healthy food options!

Seek out ways to better your personal well being, such as:

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle-  Limit your usage of single-use plastics. Stray from single utensils, bags, water bottles, and seek out reusable products to limit your personal waste.

Buy second-hand- Excessive purchasing of first-hand clothes, shoes, bags, and books has become a major contributor to waste and overconsumption. To contribute in a positive way, buy second-hand!  Not only does purchasing second-hand help reduce waste, it also gives the chance to purchase unique, budget-friendly items while supporting a sustainable future.

Immerse yourself in nature- Seek out green spaces on our campus! URI’s Greenhouse and Horridge Conservatory is filled with a variety of plants. Located at the top of campus, the greenhouse is a quiet and peaceful place to unwind on campus. As previously mentioned, across the street are the North Woods walking trail. This scenic path is the perfect opportunity for students to get away from campus and the stresses of workload while being active outdoors. Another alternative is our bike path. Beginning behind Brookside and stretching all the way to Narragansett Beach, the bike path covers a range of scenery. Be sure to check out these nature spots on campus!

Get clean: Use products that are environmentally friendly! Check labels and make sure you know what is in the products you are using. Eating whole foods and experimenting with different healthy recipes can be exciting, you might just find your new favorite meal.

Get healthy: Be consistent with your sleep schedule. Sleeping is incredibly important to maintaining a healthy lifestyle and enhancing personal wellness. To get involved while being active, sign up for a group exercise class! Get moving with your peers, try out different classes, and take a hands-on approach to getting involved in your community.

Be Active, Be Green, Belong

URI provides numerous opportunities, clubs, and outreaches for students to become integrated with sustainability. Clubs such as Master Gardener, URI Saves, and the URI Outing Club seek out routes to ensure environmental wellness on campus. More ways to get involved with clubs on campus can be found here

To celebrate Earth Day, Campus Recreation will be hosting an Earth Day event on April 22nd, on the quad. Wellness staff will be leading a plogging activity, encouraging students to jog around campus and pick up trash. Join us on the quad to soak up some sunlight and better your environment. Can’t wait to see you Rams!
