This Friday, come on down to the quad and join Campus Recreation and the Rhody F1rst team on National First-Generation College Celebration Day to honor and celebrate first-generation college students, faculty, and staff! Every year, students at the University of Rhode Island gather to celebrate with food from the Rhody Eatz food truck and music from DJ Locura. Campus Rec will be talking and engaging with students and families about campus resources. They will also encourage those to partake in our giveaway items (gear, prizes, stickers, and more!) This day will also be a great opportunity for students to learn about Rhody F1rst and Campus Recreation and accessible resources for first-generation college students.
First-generation students are those whose parent or legal guardian has not earned a four-year college degree. The University of Rhode Island’s first-generation student body includes thousands of Rhody Rams who are grateful for the opportunity to be the first in their family to attend or graduate from college. URI is dedicated to supporting these inspiring students from the enrollment process through graduation and beyond. At Rhody F1rst, a first-generation student club, they offer financial aid workshops, career planning sessions, resources to navigate academic and professional journeys, and provide a safe space for students to share their experiences and build connections.
As a first-generation college student myself, organizations like Rhody F1rst are so important in guiding students in their transition and journey in college. As I went through my college application process for the Talent Development program, for Rhode Island first-gen students, I wasn’t alone. I had financial help for my housing and tuition expenses, informational sessions before the fall semester, and my TD summer experience all helped prepare me for entering college. Even now, I still receive guidance and support as a first-gen student, whether that’s expenses, food security, or academic support. As a Rhody F1rst, I have a support network in my corner helping me every step of the way to achieve my goals. Working with Campus Recreation, I have found my place at URI. As a first-generation student, Campus Rec has allowed me to flourish and build my skills within my major and connect with others all across campus. It has also enabled me to continue doing what I love with writing and making a positive impact.
If you are interested in learning more about Rhody F1rst and Campus Rec, be sure to check them out today November 7th from 11 AM-1 PM on the quad! Visit this event on URI Involved for complete details.
