The Power of Personal Training at Campus Rec

Personal training is a customized fitness journey that helps you reach your wellness and health goals. A personal trainer helps others achieve their goals by creating personalized training programs, providing guidance on exercises, and offering encouragement and support. Our licensed trainers are dedicated to making sure your experience is fun, safe, and successful, promoting our values of being active and belonging.

There are many benefits that come with working with a personal trainer, from helping you achieve your fitness goals to finding the best ways to safely exercise while living with a chronic condition. Working with a personal trainer can help build motivation, consistency, and confidence in yourself. Most importantly, personal trainers encourage fun every step of the way!

I had the pleasure of interviewing David Jenkins, the Program Coordinator. I asked him questions about his role here at Campus Recreation, and what students could expect from our services. As Coordinator of Fitness, Health, & Well-being, he is primarily responsible for our personal training program and the fitness equipment across both of our facilities. In his role, he is most passionate about being a “service-based leader and providing quality fitness and wellness programs for our members.”

When asked what inspired him to take on the role of Coordinator here at Campus Rec, he stated that the values of Campus Rec at URI directly align with him as a professional, especially the values of being student-focused and supporting holistic well-being. “Each semester I’m able to support and be supported by those values, and it inspires me to continue to contribute in the next semester and build off of all of the great work we do here.”

With the support of our certified trainers, people who attend our programs will be supported and in good hands when working toward their fitness/wellness goals. “Being a personal trainer at URI means that you will be supported and presented with opportunities to learn and grow. Trainers working with Campus Recreation assist a diverse population with achieving their fitness goals. From students, to faculty/staff, and community members, our personal trainers are able to train and serve a wide spectrum of individuals. They also have the opportunity to train athletes and specialized groups in programs such as Women on Weights and the Faculty and Staff Exercise Training Program.”

“At the University of Rhode Island we not only encourage growth but also dedicate time and effort for it to happen intentionally. The department of Campus Recreation supports continued education so we host workshops and training to assist in the betterment of everyone’s profile as an instructor.”

Some encouraging words to those looking for some extra support and motivation when wanting to pursue their fitness journey here at Campus Recreation, Jenkins expressed that whatever path you take here at the University of Rhode Island, start with identifying “why.” “It’s a great idea to understand why you’re taking the steps that you are, because having a clear purpose helps with direction and resilience. Whether that’s pushing through study sessions, preparing for an exam, or showing up to the gym on days when motivation is low, you’ll now have a solid foundation.”
