Campus Recreation hosted its first ever dodgeball tournament this past Friday, February 20th, at Keaney Gymnasium. The single-elimination tournament featured 18 teams, which fostered intense and lively competition.
Each match consisted of three five minute games of 6v6 dodgeball. If neither team had all six players knocked out, the winner was determined by which team had more players still standing when the five-minute timer expired. The first team to win two out of three moved on to the next round and avoided elimination.
To kick off the tournament, The Files matched up with The Juan and Only on Court 1. The Juan and Only were quick and efficient in their win, eliminating all of The Files’ players before the 5 minutes in both rounds. Court 2 was quiet for the first round. Urinal was meant to face off with TBD on Court 2, but TBD’s no-show allowed Urinal to move on to the second round.
In the second round, The Juan and Only faced SigEp1, on Court 1. The Juan and Only took the win, dominating SipEp 1 in just 2 rounds. At the same time, Court 2 hosted Ball of Duty and Urinal’s first game, Urinal taking down Ball of Duty. Also on Court 2 in the second round, Deutschland and Kirk faced off, Deutschland falling to Kirk.
The teams remaining in the quarterfinals included Kirk, Balls of Steel, Urinal, Dodge Ballers, The Juan and Only, and Dodgefathers. Court 1 held The Juan and Only’s match up with the Dodgefathers, The Juan and Only maintaining their winning streak and defeating the Dogefathers. Court 2 saw Kirk and their match against Balls of Steel, the Balls of Steel defeating Kirk and moving on. Court 2 also hosted Urinal and the Dodge Ballers quarterfinal game, Dodge Ballers defeating Urinal 2-0.

Only four teams remained in the semifinals. Court 1 hosting The Juan and Only’s match against CTE, and Court 2’s intense round with Balls of Steel and Dodge Ballers. The Juan and Only dominated Court 1, making it all the way to the championship round to face off with Balls of Steel. At the pinnacle of the night, The Juan and Only fell in the championship round to the Balls of Steel, finishing second. Emerging victorious through 5 rounds, Balls of Steel placed first in the tournament/
The stands were full of not just teams, but also friends showing their support. The competition was lively and upbeat, with 4 officials keeping a close eye on the games. Teams were made up of a variety of niches; some were club sport teams, others were made up of free agents simply in it for the love of the game. Senior, Oliva Powers, told me it was their roommate and team captain, Kathryn Mullen, who encouraged them to make a team on a whim, in hopes to have a fun night of competition. While the team did not have much success at dodgeball, they told me it made for a memorable and fun night. Intramurals are a great way to get connected with others in a low-stakes and fun environment, and this tournament embodied this perfectly.
Overall, this proved to be a successful tournament, bringing students together for some fun and competition on a Friday evening. With intramural sports and tournaments like these, it does not matter how much experience you have with the sport, just your willingness to participate will foster fun and a sense of belonging. It is never too late to join an intramural team to stay active and get involved! Be sure to check IMLeagues for other intramural events like these.
