When it comes to beginning your fitness journey, the weight room can be intimidating. If you have trouble finding a space where you can exercise without feeling judged, Women on Weights might be the answer for you! This six-week program, which meets twice a week, teaches women how to lift weights, use proper form, try different workouts, and build confidence. This program isn’t just learning how to lift weights, but finding a supportive space and community while also having fun in the process.
W.O.W. believes that women are welcome in the weight room, helping them build strength, self-assurance, and support their workout journey. Pain-free performance warm-ups and exercises are the core of Women on Weights, which help ensure safe exercise to avoid future injuries and help heal current ones.
As a freshman- and as a woman- I still find myself experiencing moments of gym-xiety. I tend to feel this anxiety when I see everyone around me using different kinds of equipment with total confidence, especially in the weight room. Watching my peers find what they’re comfortable with made me hesitant to try new things because I was focused on how I looked. That’s why these programs are so important – they create a safe space for women to exercise without judgment, assist in their fitness path, and feel empowered. Knowing that programs like WOW exist, it reassures me that there is a place for me at the gym and that I am not alone.
Building on that sense of support, the Women on Weights program will take place in the Circuit Studio and Mackal Weight room, and will be held from 3/31 through 4/30, on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:30 A.M. Registration closes Sunday, March 29 on our official Campus Rec website, and is open for all URI students who identify as women. You won’t want to miss this opportunity to elevate your fitness experience. The cost will be $50, and participants will need to prepare for each session with a water bottle, comfortable shoes, and breathable clothing that they can work out in. For more information, please contact David Jenkins, Coordinator of Fitness, Health, and Well-being: david.jenkins@uri.edu.
At Campus Rec, we are all about promoting activeness, wellness, and belonging within the URI community. This program targets many different areas of well-being, including physical and social aspects. Women on Weights is one of our programs that allows women to connect with others who share a passion for learning how to lift weights and improve their physical health. Come explore the fundamentals of strength training while learning about the different aspects of well-being!
