Last Wednesday we returned for our 5th annual FloURIsh Fest, celebrating an afternoon full of fun, community, and good memories. Fall semester at URI got its unofficial kick off this year with the return of FloURIsh Fest, held on the Quad on Wednesday, September 16th, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This annual event is hosted by Campus Rec to support the motto of “be active, be well, and belong.” FloURIsh Fest brought together more than 200+ students and 56 tabling organizations, creating a lively space for students to connect with different organizations and members of the URI community. It’s become one of the signature ways URI welcomes students back for the fall in a fun and welcoming way to kick off the new semester. Whether you’re brand new to URI or returning for another year, FloURIsh Fest brought its fun to everyone on campus.
The energy on the campus was high and vibrant as students walked across the quad, whether they were on their way to class or just stopping by to see what the event was all about, people were intrigued. The interactive booths, food truck, limited edition t-shirts, raffles, inflatable obstacle course, bubble soccer, and, of course, Dunkin University kept students enjoying their time. Recent years have also brought out things like rock climbing walls, petting zoos, and even dance classes. There is always something for everyone, no matter what kind of well-being you were looking for that day.
What keeps students coming back isn’t just the free food and merch, it’s the connections we make along the way. A quick stop at a booth can turn into a conversation with a club you didn’t know existed, a booth member who remembers your name the next time you see them, or a friend group you didn’t have an hour earlier. That’s the real work FloURIsh Fest does behind the fun, it gives students a low stakes, high energy way to jump into the URI community right as the semester begins, and it’s part of why the event has become such a fixture of fall on campus.
By the time 2 p.m. rolled around and booths started packing up, the Quad had the particular kind of tired but happy feeling that comes after a good event. T-shirts handed out, raffle tickets gone, and more than a few students walking back to their dorms with new friends, new stickers, and maybe a slightly embarrassing bubble soccer story to tell their roommates.
It’s easy to write FloURIsh Fest off as just another welcome back event, but what makes it stick out is how it captures URI’s whole community in one afternoon. Campus Rec staff, student organizations, local vendors, and thousands of students all showed up for the same two hours on the same patch of grass. There’s something genuinely nice about seeing a first year student who doesn’t know many people yet end up in a pickup bubble soccer game with a group of upperclassmen, or a student who almost skipped the whole thing walk away with a new organization to check out next week.
FloURIsh Fest is a well run, well loved reminder that URI is a place built around its people, and that showing up, even just to go grab a free t-shirt, can turn into something more. As the semester picks up speed and the Quad empties for lecture halls and libraries, it’s worth holding onto that energy from September 16th. The reminder that being active, being well, and belonging isn’t just a motto for one afternoon, but the whole point of the year ahead.
