Geographic Information for Sustainable Development – Tanzania/Kenya Coastal Zone Change Analysis
The Tanzania/Kenya coastal zone project was one of four sites that were selected by the Global Information for Sustainable Development (GISD) initiative. The Tanzania/Kenya project applied Landsat data and GIS technologies for coastal resource management. The objectives of the project included to:
- Analyze rates of resource and land use change over time over approximately 10 years: 1990 to 2000
- Answer key management questions about shoreline change,
mangrove and coastal forest change, and urban growth - Build capacity for the use of science and spatial information in management
- Identify priority locations for coastal action planning and conservation
- Develop local-level coastal management action plans
- Plan monitoring strategies and assess effectiveness of resource management policies
- Delineate management boundaries and support appropriate development decisions.
