Graduate Programs

Our graduate programs offer M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in both pure and applied mathematics, preparing students for careers in industry, government, academia, and research. Whether your goal is to advance your professional career, pursue doctoral study, or deepen your expertise in mathematics, our programs provide the mentorship, flexibility, and research opportunities to help you succeed. Qualified URI undergraduates can also accelerate their graduate education through the Accelerated Bachelor’s to Master’s (ABM) program, earning graduate credit while completing their bachelor’s degree.

Research

Graduate students work closely with faculty on cutting-edge research in a broad range of mathematical disciplines, including biomathematics, complex dynamical systems, difference equations, discrete mathematics, machine learning, artificial intelligence, mathematics education, scientific computing, numerical linear algebra, probability, and stochastic processes. Students have opportunities to collaborate on research projects, present their work at regional and national conferences, publish with faculty, and develop the analytical, computational, and communication skills that are highly valued across academic, government, and industry careers. Assistantships

Full-time graduate students may be eligible for competitive teaching assistantships that provide a stipend along with tuition, fee, and health insurance support. Teaching assistants receive mentoring and professional development in effective teaching, gain valuable classroom experience, and often have the opportunity to teach their own undergraduate courses. These experiences build confidence, leadership, and communication skills while preparing graduates for careers in higher education and a wide range of professional settings.
