*The Menden-Deuer lab has been devoting regular time to develop a justice, diversity, equity, and inclusivity (DEI) statement that can best represent our perspectives and continued study and learning. Here is an example of the statement we are working on:

Science is a never-ending journey of discovery. This journey cannot be undertaken in isolation. It is accomplished with perspectives of people from different places, of different backgrounds, and with different stories. The spectrum of identities we bring and share is praised by members of our lab, as we believe an inclusive attitude encourages us to grow as scientists and as citizens. Our lab strives to uphold a high standard of inclusivity, embracing the full range of human experiences and identities including but not limited to cultural identity, gender, class, assets, sexuality, religion, and ability. We support each other, learn from each other, and continue our journeys together.
