Biography
Dr. Jean VanderGheynst is an experienced academic leader and interdisciplinary researcher whose work has focused on sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, and industrial biotechnology. As a faculty member at UC Davis, she led collaborative research teams supported by USDA, DOE, and NSF, working closely with farmers, extension specialists, and industry partners to address agricultural and environmental challenges. Her research aligned with the mission of the UC Agricultural Experiment Station and emphasized practical solutions that improve sustainability and resilience in food and farming systems.
In leadership roles at UC Davis and UMass Dartmouth, she advanced research infrastructure, managed budgets and facilities, mentored faculty, and developed partnerships with state and federal agencies. She is committed to engaging stakeholders, expanding access to research opportunities, and communicating results in ways that inform decision-making and policy.
Jean currently serves as Dean of the College of the Environment and Life Sciences at the University of Rhode Island. She remains deeply committed to the land-grant missions of public universities and to advancing research, teaching, and outreach that contribute to the well-being of communities and the stewardship of natural resources.
