Inclusive SciComm Train the Trainer Program

Duration: 2.5 days in-person or 15-hour virtual workshop
Mode: In person preferred. Virtual requires attendees to commit to a two-week boot camp style program.
Audience size: 15 max (attendees should have working knowledge of ISC principles. If not, attendees will be asked to watch a video on ISC principles before the workshop.)

On day one, attendees will learn tools and strategies to teach others the three principles of ISC, engage with journalists to learn how to communicate science to the media, and receive an introduction to andragogy: the practice of adult education. On day two, attendees will be joined by a variety of invited ISC practitioners with an unconference model — attendees will set an agenda together and gain insights from each other on where the broader ISC community is today and where it can go in the future, providing attendees new ideas and important context as they put together their own trainings. For virtual trainings, the unconference would be replaced by guest speakers and facilitators throughout the program. On day three, participants will create and review an ISC training deck and practice training the cohort on one of the three ISC principles.

Learning outcomes: By the end of this workshop, participants will have an in-depth knowledge of ISC and be able to teach the three principles to others. Trainees will leave with greater confidence and skills around ISC, ideas for their own training sessions, a working ISC training deck and the ISC Starter Kit. Attendees will gain an understanding of the existing ISC community and make connections with people already engaged in this work.
