Microfluidics and Microsystems Laboratory at the University of Rhode Island (URI) is looking for two highly motivated and talented Ph.D. students to join our dynamic research team starting in Fall 2025 or Spring 2026.
As an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at URI, my research focuses on acoustofluidics and spans various cutting-edge projects, including environmental monitoring (with an emphasis on microplastics), organ-on-a-chip studies, low-cost microfluidics, and the integration of machine learning techniques. This is an exceptional opportunity for aspiring researchers to contribute to impactful projects and advance the fundamental understanding and innovative applications in these areas.
🔬 Research Opportunities:
- Acoustofluidics: Develop advanced techniques to manipulate fluids and particles using acoustic waves.
- Environmental Monitoring and Microplastics: Investigate methods to detect, separate, and analyze microplastics in environmental samples.
- Organ-on-a-Chip Studies: Create microfluidic devices that mimic human organ systems using acoustofluidic technology.
- Low-Cost Microfluidics: Design and fabricate affordable microfluidic devices using materials like paper and film.
- Machine Learning Integration: Apply machine learning algorithms to optimize microfluidic device performance and enable smart system automation.
📌 Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct experimental and theoretical research.
- Design, fabricate, and test novel microfluidic and acoustic devices.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams.
- Present research findings at conferences.
- Publish high-quality papers.
- Mentor junior students and manage lab activities.
🎓 Qualifications: Applicants should hold a Master’s degree (preferred) or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering, or a closely related field by the start of the appointment. Strong backgrounds in microfabrication, fluid mechanics, and acoustics techniques are desirable, along with excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
🌟 What We Offer:
- Fully funded Ph.D. positions with Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA) or Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA).
- A dynamic research environment with state-of-the-art facilities.
- Opportunities for professional development and networking.
- Competitive stipend and benefits package.
- Collaboration with leading experts in the field.
📅 Application Process: Interested candidates should submit the following documents to me at yanglin@uri.edu:
- Cover letter describing research interests and motivation
- Curriculum vitae (CV)
- Academic transcripts
- Contact information for two references
- A sample of published or submitted research work (if available)
⏳ Application Deadline: Preference will be given to those who apply before January 31, 2025.
If you’re passionate about advancing microfluidics and acoustofluidics research, I encourage you to apply and join our innovative research team at URI!
