Features
- Meet the Experts — Tom Sproul - Dr. Thomas Sproul’s research background is in Agricultural and Resource Economics, with a focus on risk modeling, insurance and risk management. He has done research on a variety of topics, including pollution regulation, farm policy, strategic behavior in fisheries, and behavioral economics and finance. Here, he shares his perspectives on offshore wind energy, and how resource economics research can help us understand the benefits and tradeoffs of developing wind farms.
- URI Partners with DEM to Generate New Fishing Status Maps Using AIS - Dr. Tom Sproul (Department of Environmental & Natural Resource Economics) and Julia Livermore (RI Department of Environmental Management) are partnering on a new study— "Fishing Status of Vessels Using the AIS: A Big Data and Machine Learning Approach".
Research
- Fishing Status of Vessels Using the AIS: A Big Data and Machine Learning Approach - The overarching goal of this study is to generate improved maps of fishing effort and landings values at sea. A technical study is needed because established methods are known to contain substantial inaccuracies, and newer approaches have not been applied to species of interest in Southern New England’s offshore wind lease areas.
