Dr. Lora Van Uffelen Featured in June 2021 Issue of the IEEE/OES Beacon Newsletter

OPERA Lab P.I. Dr. Lora Van Uffelen has an article featured in the June 2021 issue of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Ocean Engineering Society (OES) Beacon Newsletter. The article recaps the talk she gave in March of 2021 about a theoretical acoustics positioning system used for underwater navigation, which would work in a similar way to how a Global Navigation Satellite System works on land. Her article is found under the heading Providence Chapter, on pages 15 and 15 of the June 2021 issue.

Cover Article of Spring 2021 Issue of Acoustics Today

OPERA Lab P.I. Dr. Lora Van Uffelen’s article “Global Positioning Systems: On Land and Over Sea” was featured as the cover article in the Spring 2021 issue of Acoustics Today. This article explores the possibility of using underwater acoustic signals in such a way that mimics the typical satellite based global positioning systems that are so commonly used with modern smartphones. URI College of Engineering’s LinkedIn Post

The Opera Lab has been featured on URI’s College of Engineering LinkedIn page! The post shows two lab members, Melodie Ross and Luis Pomales, and lab technician Garrett Connelly, working on the Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) system that is attached to the Seaglider. The students are using data collected by the PAM during missions in the Gulf of Mexico and off of Nova Scotia, Canada, to analyze timing differences between the PAM and the Seaglider.
