Course Descriptions

This course provides foundational knowledge of issues related to education for Multilingual Learners (MLLs). Participants will learn about federal and state level policies, research on language acquisition and cultural responsiveness, and evaluate district and school level practices to improve education for MLLs. All learning will be directly aligned to the Rhode Island Standards for Educational Leaders (RISEL). (Online) Pre: Currently hold a school-based leadership certification (e.g. administrator, superintendent); permission of instructor.

The content aligns with RIDE’s new MLL Proficiency Competencies; reapproval pending.

Learning Outcomes:

As a result of participating in this course, administrators will:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of English language structures and language acquisition theories to explain how these concepts are relevant to all educators.
  2. Identify and describe personal cultural identity and biases to develop empathy, understanding, and celebration of MLLs and their families’ sociocultural context.
  3. Examine and critique the historical and political context of laws and policies that impact the education of MLLs and their families.
  4. Explore RI’s Strategic Plan for MLL Success to determine school or district-based plans for improvement.
  5. Demonstrate a deep understanding of school and district practices that impact MLLs and their families to become an Educational Leader who is an agent of change.

Ready to Enroll?

Fall Semester enrollment for EDC 597 opens every July. Non-degree students begin by submitting a non-degree application and receiving approval from the instructor.

How to Register

  1. If you are a non-degree or new student, submit an application.
  2. Once approved after 3-5 business days, create a URI Account.
  3. Set-up Single Sign-On (SSO) through Microsoft Authenticator.
  4. Enroll in the course through eCampus.
