Concurrent Enrollment Program

Overview

The Concurrent Enrollment Program at the University of Rhode Island is designed for motivated students, typically juniors and seniors, who seek to get a head start on college credit and who are looking to be challenged academically while in high school.

The State of Rhode Island covers the cost for public high school students to enroll in a concurrent course at their high school during the fall and spring terms. Course costs for concurrent courses offered at private schools are not covered under this state-funded program. Additionally, homeschooled students are not eligible for course costs to be covered.

Benefits of Concurrent Enrollment

Earn college credits while still in high school, helping you save both time and tuition costs once you enter college.

Experience College-Level Learning

  • Courses follow the pacing and rigor of real college classes, taught by instructors teaching college-level curriculum.
  • Explore a variety of subjects to discover what interests you most before entering college — all while gaining a realistic preview of college coursework and expectations.
  • Credits earned through concurrent enrollment are transferable to your chosen post-secondary institution.
  • Programs may offer opportunities to visit the URI campus and experience university academic facilities firsthand.

Flexible, Accessible, and Supportive

  • Unlike Advanced-Placement courses, you earn college credit by successfully completing the course, not by passing a single high-stakes exam.
  • Coursework emphasizes consistent learning and mastery throughout the semester.
  • Stay close to home — no need to travel to the URI campus in Kingston.
  • Continue learning from teachers you already know and trust, as your high school instructor also serves as your university-affiliated concurrent enrollment instructor.

Student Eligibility

To earn URI credit, students should have at least a 3.0 high school GPA.

Freshmen or sophomores can enroll for URI credit if their high school guidance counselor or instructor provides a letter confirming strong academic performance (generally shown by a 3.0 GPA or higher). Freshmen are encouraged to enroll in the spring semester, so their school has time to confirm that they meet this GPA requirement.

To receive a URI transcript for your high school course, be sure to complete all URI enrollment steps and finish the process by the university registration deadlines listed below:
