Overview

This activity will address routes of administration, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics across multiple medications and delivery devices, with particular emphasis on updated clinical guidelines and emerging biologic therapies. It will also target identified gaps in pharmacists’ ability to accurately recognize and assess acute pericarditis, differentiate it from other causes of chest pain, and implement guideline-directed pharmacologic management—especially in patients with contraindications or complex comorbidities.

The overarching educational goal is to enhance pharmacists’ competence in interpreting diagnostic criteria and disease staging, and in developing evidence-based, patient-specific treatment plans that align with current (ESC) guidelines.

Target Audience

Pharmacists in all practice settings.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, pharmacists will be able to:

  • Describe the pathophysiology and clinical presentation of acute pericarditis.
  • Differentiate acute pericarditis from other relevant disease states.
  • Apply European Society of Cardiology (ESC) guideline diagnostic
criteria and the American College of Cardiology (ACC) 2025
Concise Clinical Guidance (CCG) for diagnostic staging of acute
    pericarditis.
  • Develop patient-specific pharmacologic treatment plans for acute
pericarditis, including appropriate use of anakinra and rilonacept.
