International Scholar Dr. Emma Stokes to Visit URI

The Physical Therapy program won the honor of hosting one of University’s Distinguished Visiting    International Scholars for 2014. Dr. Emma Stokes will be spending the week of April 7th through the 11th with us! Dr. Stokes is on the faculty at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland and is the Vice President of the World Confederation for Physical Therapy.

During her visit Dr. Stokes will provide a variety of presentations for students, faculty and the community. She speaks regularly around the world on such topics as health and wellness, outcome measurement, patient advocacy, international healthcare issues, and professional practice from a global perspective. She is an engaging and professional speaker in both interpersonal and large group settings and is able to relate her topics of discussion to various audiences.

Dr. Stokes is excited to spend time in Rhode Island! Please mark your calendars for some of the scheduled events.

7:00 PM Public Lecture / HSS Speaker Series “A Cabinet of Curiosities: How Opportunity and Innovation Can Shape Healthcare”

Dr. Stokes will provide and international perspective about how providers and consumers of healthcare can find opportunities to make positive change in our complex system.

Friday, April 11th

2:00 PM Panel “Patient Empowerment: A Revolution In Healthcare”

The panelists will share their views on patient advocacy and empowerment in light of a more global society, challenges to healthcare access, and the Affordable Care Act. Panelists will provide thoughtful discussion to stimulate action by key stakeholders to implement change resulting in patient empowerment and better health outcomes.

Panelists: Christine Ferguson – Director of RI Health Benefits Exchange, Elizabeth Roberts – Lt. Governor of Rhode Island, Michael Fine – Director of the RI DOH, Albert Charbonneau – Executive Director, RI Business Group on Health, and Emma Stokes – Faculty Trinity College Dublin and VP of WCPT.
