URI DPT Students and Faculty Support RI APDA’s Optimism Walk and 5K Fun Run

On Saturday, September 27th, students from the University of Rhode Island’s Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program joined forces with faculty to support the Rhode Island Chapter of the American Parkinson’s Disease Association (RI APDA) during their annual Optimism Walk and 5K Fun Run at Warwick City Park.

First, second, and third-year DPT students collaborated with Dr. Christine Clarkin, professor of physical therapy, and Dr. Ken Vinacco, adjunct professor and URI DPT alum, to help organize and manage the event. Students assisted with event setup and oversaw the 5K Fun Run, which welcomed nearly 50 participants. Congratulations to first-year DPT student Jake Riley, who placed first overall in the race!

The event raised over $125,000 in support of RI APDA’s mission to empower individuals and families affected by Parkinson’s disease through inclusive access to care, education, wellness programs, and community support.

Special thanks to Joseph, a senior in the Kinesiology Department and a member of the Clarkin Neuro-Collaborative Lab, for hosting the research table throughout the day and engaging the community in ongoing Parkinson’s research initiatives.

We’re proud of our students and faculty for their continued commitment to service, advocacy, and community engagement.
