Bunmi Ogunmola ’26

I am from Providence, RI. I decided to come to URI because the school supported me financially, and it was one of my closest options to home. During my freshman year, Public Health was originally called “Health Studies,” but then the department officially changed to “Public Health” before I graduated. I chose to major in Public Health because I knew that I wanted to work in the field of healthcare and help others, while also learning about the protection and improvement of health in our communities through education, policies, research, etc.

What surprised me most about URI is how everyone is so connected here at the university. We are a state school in Rhode Island, and it’s easy to connect with others and build community. Coming from a small tight knit (high school) community, I was able to branch out and meet new people.

My URI campus involvement has been a great asset to me because I have been able to create and build connections throughout my time here, which is such a blessing! I’m currently a Resident Assistant (RA) in a first-year building, and it brings back so many memories of when I was a Freshman here at URI! I’ve worked at the URI Campus Store as a cashier, danced with ALIMA Dance Association, and was a model for the ASO Hair Show. I have been able to really step out of my comfort zone and try new things! During the Fall 2025 semester, I interned remotely with the Rhode Island State Government Internship Program. I was connected with internship experiences throughout the state government. This included the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial branches as well as state departments of government, municipal agencies and community, and non-profit organizations. I was placed in areas of interest where I worked with my supervisor on a variety of projects and tasks that enabled me to meet my personal educational learning objectives.

The biggest strength of the Public Health major is how there are different sectors and key areas that you can work in for future career jobs, internships, opportunities, etc. You can do anything with this major, depending on what path you choose to take. The department has an amazing faculty and staff that are willing to support you in every way possible.

Post graduation, I plan to work at a health-based organization focusing on Health Promotion and Community Health. I also have interests in Health Education and Health Communications. I would like to join the workforce first, gain additional experience, and then consider applying for my Master’s in Public Health.

My favorite URI memory would have to be the entire Talent Development Program experience, all of the wonderful connections that I made, and the people that I met. I do have so many memories and moments from my time here. I’m so grateful to have been a part of this incredible department, college, and university. Thank you to the URI Public Health Department and the amazing faculty and staff members for all that you do; you are all greatly appreciated!
