Maya Byrne, a senior Health Studies major from Newport, RI, traveled to Lafayette, Louisiana with 23 other URI students to be part of an alternative spring break to provide flood relief. The URI volunteers partnered with Habitat for Humanity and other local volunteer organizations to build houses destroyed by flooding, work in a food bank, plant trees, and more. URI Service Corps planned the alternative spring break.

 

This trip was Maya’s  third year of being part of an alternative spring break trip with the URI Service Corps. She has previously traveled to New Mexico and South Carolina.

 

Maya, treasurer,  and the 3 other board members, Joey Walter, Rachel Sylvia, and Caroline Hacunda,  worked for URI Service Corps to be recognized as an official URI organization and to establish a strong foundation for URI Service Corps. This is the first year the organization is recognized as an official URI organization. Previously it was under the umbrella of Habitat for Humanity and URI S.A.V.E.S.
