Biosafety Committee:
Application Review Process
URI faculty and staff (including post-doctoral researchers) who plan to conduct Biological Research (as defined in the URI IBC Governance and Operating Policies) must submit applications for IBC review prior to commencing the activity. Applicants must submit application materials to the IBC at least three weeks prior to the date of the scheduled IBC meeting. Please allow at least 4-6 weeks for protocol review, depending on the complexity of the project and the extent of revisions required.
All information must be submitted through IRBNet. For more information regarding IRBNet, see IRBNet Access and Guidance. The IBC Registration Document for Biological Research is available on IRBNet and the Research Resources page.
IBC Meeting Schedule and Deadlines
Principal investigators (PI) are encouraged to present their applications at IBC meetings. Individuals planning to present their application will be emailed an approximate time to be present at the meeting and the location of the meeting. Depending on the type of Biological Research, the application may be considered for the Expedited Review procedure that does not require presenting at an IBC meeting.
Changes/Modifications to Previously Approved Applications
Changes/modifications to an IBC-approved project must be reviewed and approved by the IBC PRIOR to their implementation. Requested modifications to IBC-approved research and teaching protocols are considered either minor or major.
