SURF Program Update – Summer 2023
This past summer RI-INBRE hosted its 20th Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program. The SURF program was first organized in 2004 to increase the number of undergraduate students participating in scientific research activities across the state of Rhode Island. The program has grown significantly over the years, with 49 students in 2009 to more than 100 students each year since 2015. SURF participants complete mentored research and professional development activities during the summer, with the program ending in the annual state-wide SURF poster symposium.
The 2023 SURF program ran from May 22 through August 12 and 124 students participated in the program at various higher education institutions across Rhode Island. On July 28, the students presented their research at the Rhode Island Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium (RI-SURS).
We would like to thank Dr. Kris Monahan, Sr. Director Sponsored Projects and Research Compliance, Providence College for conducting the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) Training for our SURF participants. The major RCR topics included Human Subject Research, Research with Animals, Biosafety/Lab Safety, Research Misconduct, Data Ownership and Protection, and Mentor/Trainee Relationship. Dr. Monahan has over 20 years of experience and a deep commitment to research integrity, diversity, equity and inclusion.
