Since 2001, the RI-INBRE program has trained over 2000 students in biomedical research, with most of those students participating in the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) and the Student Training and Research (STAR) programs. SURF currently pairs students with research mentors at the University of Rhode Island and Brown University, while STAR pairs students with mentors at the primarily undergraduate institutions. In addition to research, students are giving training in a variety of topics including research ethics, how to apply to graduate school, and science communication. At the end of the summer, students present their research at the annual SURF Symposium.
These programs have inspired many undergraduate students to pursue careers in biomedical research, with many going on to graduate or medical school, or finding biomedical jobs in the private sector. Many of these students stay in New England and Rhode Island, contributing to the sate and regional biomedical workforce. They also have the opportunity to participate in the RI-INBRE Workforce Development and Training Program which teaches them valuable research skills that they can use in their summer projects. A few of our students have even returned to the program as mentors themselves!
