Project Description

After the success of the SimpleChartsRI web-based data visualization tool built last summer by SURF students, I am proposing enhancements to the tool. SimpleChartsRI allows for focus on the data and effective charts that reflect it. This tool gives high-school students the opportunity to experience what it is to be a data scientist and see how each sample reveals its own stories. Raw data looks like numbers or information on a table but instead, this tool shows that data can become a narrative.
My proposal for SURF Summer 2022 is to continue working on the Data Visualization Web-Tool: SimpleChartsRI.com. What will be worked on is transforming the tool to become an interactive teaching tool. The sample page will have 3 versions: a teacher tab, student tab, and regular tab. The teacher tab will have samples that better suit a teaching environment and will have tips and lesson plans that can go along with the samples selected for the teacher tab. The student tab will have samples that they can easily learn from which will include pop-up questions about the sample they are looking at. The regular tab will have all our samples for anyone to use and will work just as the tool has been before without the teacher or student features. The regular tab will have all existing samples for anyone to use and will work just as the tool has been before without the teacher or student features. Another feature to be worked on is the resource page. There could be a tab for upcoming news such as data visualization talks or upcoming workshops such as the data visualization workshop we provide in the Summer. This could be in the form of a carousel or as small cards with descriptions and a hyperlink to the source.
