Project Description

Georgia Rhodes of RISD’s Edna Lawrence Nature Lab

The RISD Nature Lab is looking for an undergraduate student to work on The Illuminated Bay, a project funded by a Rhode Island Science and Technology Advisory Council (RI-STAC) collaborative research grant. The Illuminated Bay is a large-scale visualization experience displaying complex ecological dynamics on a three-dimensional model of Narragansett Bay. Designers and artists from RISD have collaborated with Bay researchers and scientists from around the state to create a one-of-a-kind public art installation. The Illuminated Bay reveals the science at play in our world, turning the visible and invisible, the massive and the micro, into an amazing, graspable, tactile experience.

This position involves working with Nature Lab researchers to create compelling, visual, data-driven animations for this platform. Dependent on COVID-19 restrictions, students will also be involved with deploying this platform at public events around Providence and surrounding areas.

This project involves both field & lab/computer work

Required/Preferred Skills

Students should have a strong proficiency in Adobe After Effects, Illustrator and Premiere. Students with an interest in and experience with evaluating public engagement are also encouraged to apply.

Will students require their own transportation to field sites and/or other off-campus locations?

Yes
