Biography

Corporal Frederick M. Woods was born in Orange, Massachusetts on 20 December 1892.  He was the son of Harry L. Woods and Edith G. Putman. He entered Rhode Island State College (RISC) in September 1915 with the class of 1919. Frederick majored in Applied Science.  He attended RISC for nearly two years and was active in Theta Chi and participated in the Army ROTC Program while a student.

When the United States entered World War I, there were 562 male students enrolled at Rhode Island State College; 334 left to serve in WW I. Frederick, like so many of his classmates, departed college before he graduated and enlisted in the United States Army.  He was a Corporal in the 5^th Company, 3^rd Motor Truck Mechanic Regiment in France.  During the execution of his duties, Frederick became ill and was hospitalized.  Corporal Frederick M. Woods died on 2 October 1918 of pneumonia in Camp Indre, Centre, France.

A military funeral was held in October 1918 at US Cemetery #32, Flanders Field, Belgium.  Corporal Frederick M. Woods, US Army, answered the call to serve his nation with courage and honor during World War I.
