Stipend Review

 

  • The Good 5 Cent Cigar
    • Managing Editor
      • Basically like the vice president. Second in command to the editor-in-chief.  Is in charge of staff and make sure that everything is on track.  Thursdays, assist editor by helping assigning story.  Weekend, check in with editors and see how stories are going.  Monday, see how stories are going.  Tuesday, check in with editors again and write own story.  Wednesday, overlook all the stories.  Stories are not finished until three people have edited it.  After copy-edit, put the stories onto the computer.  Sometimes the process is not complete until 3 in the morning.  Keep track of everything.
      • Attended welcome days and first night help recruit new students to the paper.  Talk to journalism classes to advertise the group to students.
      • Filled in for photo editor when the photo editor is unavailable.

    • Staff Writers (6 people in position)
      • Required to write two articles a week.  Stories are assigned Thursday, reporters have the opportunity to select what kind of story they wish to write.  By Tuesday, required to have contacted two sources and scheduled interviews.  Stories are due Thursday.  If stories drop, get reassigned stories are reach out to people again.  If there are no responses, different stories are assigned to the reporter.  Transcribe interviews for accuracy.  Spend about 9-10 hours working a week.  Have done video stories and newscasts to put stories in a visual form.  Video stories take more time than written stories.
      • The team of staff reporters is required to ensure that the paper can publish many the many stories required by the bylaws.  Staff reporters are held accountable to write two stories each.  This ensures that there at least 12 stories to put into the paper.  Non-staff reporters also contribute to the paper.
      • The Good 5 Cent Cigar gives others the opportunities to share their stories.
      • Can be required to produce a supplemental graphic to ensure that stories have accompanying photos if photographers are unavailable.

    • Entertainment Editor
      • Responsible for assembling the stories for the week.  Help students get in touch with student artists, musicians, actors, writers for interviews.  Responsible for telling students about events on and off campus.  Provides a means for students in the entertainment field to get their work out there.
      • Wednesday: helps coordinates which stories go where and organizes the layout of the paper.
      • Checks in Sunday and Monday with reporters to ensure that everything is fine.  Stories are due in on Tuesday night.
      • Spend 16 to 20 hours weekly working on paper.
      • Designs the layout for the entertainment section of the paper.
      • Consistently 2 pages of entertainment stories weekly.
      • Try to keep the stories more campus oriented, but also features some stories from around the state.

    • Sports Editor
      • In charge of content and layout of sports section.  In addition, required to write at least one story a week.  Thursday, meet with writers and assign stories.  Give media contact information to the reporters.  Tell reporters what angle the editor is looking for.
      • On story of his/her own choosing, contact photo editor to get photos.  On weeks without games, contact media relations person of athletic department to get photo of athletes.
      • Report to managing editor on Monday to inform them of how the stories are coming along
      • 10-20 hours week.
      • The sports section averages 4-5 sports stories weekly.
