Professional Learning Activities within the Lab
Members of the translanguaging lab are committed to supporting professional learning that enhances both research and practice. In line with this commitment, the professional learning arm of the lab facilitates opportunities for graduate students and faculty to develop their knowledge and skills in researching language and language learning and for educators to deepen their understanding of translanguaging pedagogy. The lab is also committed to disseminating translanguaging scholarship to both academic and broader audiences and engages in this effort through books studies, webinars, and lectures.

Language, Equity, and Access Doctoral (LEAD) Group Meetings
The Translanguaging Lab organizes monthly meetings for doctoral students interested in language and equity. Students do not have to be members of the translanguaging lab to participate in these meetings, although we encourage students to join a lab research project to deepen their professional learning. During LEAD meetings, we engage in a range of activities, which any given month might include: sharing updates and initial findings from lab research projects, supporting students preparing to present at academic conferences, analyzing data, and engaging in ongoing learning about theory or research methods. If you are interested in participating in LEAD, please contact Dr. Nicole King at nicole.king@uri.edu.
Translanguaging Book Study
Thanks to generous funding from our Dean, we hosted a book study on January 23, 2026 of the seminal translanguaging text: Translanguaging: Language, bilingualism, and education by Ofelia Garcia and Li Wei. Thank you to all faculty, students, and staff who participated!
Professional Development for Educators
Members of our lab teach courses, deliver talks, and facilitate workshops for educators around translanguaging. If you are interested in learning more about our professional development offerings, please contact Dr. Laura Hamman-Ortiz at laura.hammanortiz@uri.edu.
