In Workday, a Supervisory Organization is the core structure grouping employees under a manager in a hierarchy, defining reporting lines for human resources information as well as identifying the organizational chart for the university. Supervisory organizations acts as the building block for an organization’s management structure, containing positions and jobs, and can be configured for departments, teams, or projects, with security and workflows like requests for time off and recruiting actions are supported by this management structure.
It is critical that the management structure at URI is accurately represented in Workday both to support our employees as well display information as the system of record for human resources and organizational data at the university.
The Role of the Manager in Workday
Workday provides the visibility, control, and collaboration managers need to effectively manage teams. Manager Self Service in Workday provides supervisors with job, position, and compensation information for their direct reports, including access to numerous built-in reports to support HR-related analytics and decisions. Managers are also able to view and manage their employee requests, access and support performance related information and review details about open positions and candidates for positions within their organization.
Managers will be supported by others within their organization with tasks in Workday and delegation for task action will be available as it is today.
Timeline
Supervisory organizations were drafted with department support in fall, 2025 and will be refined at various points throughout the system implementation. The next review of supervisory organizational structure is scheduled for spring, 2026.
