Certificate in Gender and Women’s Studies

The URI Gender and Women’s Studies Program offers an interdisciplinary graduate certificate program informed by advanced feminist scholarship and pedagogical principles, designed to enhance the educational background and career opportunities for matriculated graduate students or nonmatriculated postbaccalaureate students.

GWS Certificate Requirements

The GWS certificate program requires 9 credits of graduate work in any field and 5 credits of GWS courses. (These courses may count toward a graduate degree in a field such as psychology, history, or English. Please confirm with your advisor.)

Matriculated graduate students

  • 9 credits of graduate study that focus on women or gender, e.g.  courses that focus on the work on a specific woman writer (or writers), Women’s History, Psychology of Women, or courses such as Social Psychology and Special Readings in American History that include substantial research focused on women or gender.
  • Two GWS graduate level courses

Non-matriculated students

  •  9 credits of graduate study in any relevant graduate program or combination of programs (such as communication studies, English, history, human development and family studies, nursing, or psychology), subject to approval by the GWS program director.
  • Two GWS graduate level courses
