Q. What makes the College of Arts and Sciences at URI unique?
A. A&S is so unique because students are really able to construct a curriculum that is diverse, impactful, and tailored to their specific interests. My Arts and Sciences education has made me a much more well-rounded student, thinker, and worker, and has given me skills that I will carry with me far beyond the classroom. The community of students and professors I have met in my four years here has exposed me to a wealth of new ideas and perspectives, and they have been so influential in my academic journey.
What accomplishments and/or activities at URI are you most proud of now?
I am most proud to say that I have maintained a 4.0 GPA through all seven semesters at URI. Knowing that I’ve been able to grasp these concepts I’m learning in class and translate them into quality work has shown me that I’m truly in my element here. Additionally, the work I’ve been producing for the last two years for The Good Five Cent Cigar as a writer, broadcast reporter, anchor, and social media coordinator has allowed me to apply my communications and writing studies into the real world.
What research projects, internships, experiential learning, and/or study abroad programs did you participate in at URI? How did they enhance your education?
I have completed three internships in my time at URI. I was an Events and Operations Intern at WaterFire in Summer 2019, a Marketing Intern at RNMKRS in Summer 2020, and a News Writing Intern at WLNE-ABC6 in Fall 2020. I am also currently completing my Honors Project on the ways people process new information in times of societal instability. All of these experiences have enhanced my education by allowing me to explore different areas and topics, giving me great experiential learning opportunities in the process.
What do you value about your liberal arts education?
What I value the most about my liberal arts education is that it has given me so much freedom to explore topics I value so deeply. While I was a good student in high school, I never connected deeply with education because of both the emphasis on grades over learning and the very by-the-numbers way of looking at the world it presented. Because of the vast amount of learning opportunities A&S has given me in my chosen field, each with its own creative approaches and perspectives, I feel like I am being shaped by my education more now than ever before.
