No GRB Left Behind: Improving LIGO GRB Searches for 04 and Beyond

Gammy-ray bursts (GRBs) are among the most energetic events in the universe. Occurring when immense stars collapse or when two neutron stars collide, these events can release as much energy in a few seconds as the Milky Way Galaxy emits in a year. Working with physics professor Robert Coyne and UMass-URI Gravity Research Consortium, Ivan will work to automate data-collection of GRB events, ultimately expanding the number of events that scientists are able to study.

“As someone who is planning on attending graduate school and later a career in research, I want to get started with as much research as I can as early as possible.I am working on a topic I find genuinely interesting and am able to spend my time learning about the universe. At the end of the day, I couldn’t ask for anything better.” –Ivan Paniagua
