Overview
The Pre-Law program at URI provides preparation, support, and advising for students who are considering applying to law school, whatever your major may be. Our advisor, Chris Parker, is here to guide you through your undergraduate studies and help you choose the degree program(s), courses, experiential opportunities, and other activities that will pave your way to law school, and beyond. We also strive to connect students with our large network of URI alumni in the legal profession.
We also work in conjunction with state agencies and local lawyers, to provide you with internship opportunities in law firms and legal departments such as the Attorney General’s Office and the Public Defender’s Office.
When the time comes, we’ll assist you with preparing law school applications, scheduling of interviews with law school recruiters, and Law School Admission Test (LSAT) preparation. We’ll also help you choose the right schools for you, and work with you on the application process. Please contact Chris Parker (cmparker@uri.edu) to be added to the URI Pre-Law email list.
How to get started
Resources and Clubs
Mock Trial Club
Mock trial club gives students the opportunity to present arguments, question witnesses, make objections, and practice courtroom procedures in a competitive and educational setting. It also allows students to showcase critical thinking, public speaking, and legal analysis: all core skills for future legal professionals. The student organization recently partnered with other legal organizations on campus and became the first public University in Rhode Island to compete regionally in the American Mock Trial Association Tournament.
Women's Pre-law Society
Mock Opportunities
Throughout the academic year, there are a variety of opportunities to gauge your interest in pursuing a law degree like mock law classes, mock LSATS, and mock trials. At the beginning of each semester, law school admissions officers from around the country come to URI’s campus to provide insight in the application process, what they look for in a strong application, and to talk with students.
Phi Alpha Delta
Phi Alpha Delta (PAD) is the largest Pre-Law Fraternity in the world with over 330,000 members, and chapters in both undergraduate and graduate universities. PAD has a vast alumni network including eight Supreme Court Justices, along with countless attorneys, judges, and public officials. The PAD chapter at URI brings together students interested in the Pre-Law field by having LSAT prep lessons, guest speakers including deans of admissions at multiple law schools, social events to connect, and more! At URI, the chapter provides a supportive community where students can build lasting connections, explore career paths, and prepare for success in law school and beyond.
