Q. How did your URI degree best prepare you for your career path?
A. URI’s Theatre program aided in preparing for life after graduation as the curriculum offered was well-rounded and allowed students to understand all aspects of theatre. For example, as an acting concentrate, I also took stage management and design courses, etc. Through this curriculum I was also introduced to guest teachers and local experts such as instructors in Boal’s Theatre for Social Change and Theatre of the Oppressed, which inspired my curiosity to use theatre to give voices to those who feel silenced. My URI degree also prepared me for the rigor of graduate school and balance of everyday life. In theatre students are often balancing a number of responsibilities, (school, work, performances, and personal responsibilities) I found my time in URI theatre department as a great lesson in balancing life’s work and play.
In your opinion, what is the value of the arts both academically and in the community?
The arts are of value academically and to the community because they are a reflection of everyday life. Through theatre, art and storytelling we are able to learn about our past, understand and explore our present, and build toward a better future. “Theatre is a form of knowledge; it should and can also be a means of transforming society. Theatre can help us build our future, rather than just waiting for it.” ~Augusto Boal, Theatre of the Oppressed
