Matthew Kiesewetter, an associate professor of Chemistry, and some of his students have teamed up with the Departments of Plant Sciences and Entomology, Animal Science, and Wildlife and Conservation Biology to study bees. They are working on developing an organic way — using chemistry — to control the harmful mites that have been decimating bee colonies.

Chemistry Professor Mindy Levine has hosted Sugar Science Day since 2016 as way of empowering girls to explore chemistry and other STEM fields. Research has shown that girls start losing interest in science around middle school, and while the majority of college graduates and master’s level graduates are women, their numbers lag in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics professions.
