The Faculty Development team helps you build upon your teaching strengths so that you can share the love of your discipline with students and build an equitable and inclusive classroom.

Outcomes

Faculty Development designs and delivers programs where instructors can make progress toward:

Connecting Pedagogical Practice to Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Social Justice

We work with instructors who wish to balance disciplinary norms, content, and socialization with their commitment to social justice. Our role is to help instructors maintain rigor while promoting equity, aligning pedagogical practice with values.

Cultivating a Relationship Rich Environment around Teaching

We encourage programming which helps instructors connect with one another and/or with students, develop a sense of belonging, and cultivates solidarity among instructors around teaching which is informed by research-based approaches.

Developing a Growth-Oriented Approach to Teaching

We develop programs which will meet instructors where they are and help get them to their next level, or where they want to get, in their growth as a teacher. Programs support the whole spectrum of ability, interest, skill in pedagogy.

Telling Your Teaching Story

We aim to promote a culture of recognition around the work instructors do to become better teachers and ensure that instructors of all classifications are able to craft a satisfying career, in particular with an eye toward tenure and promotion.

This workshop is for instructors who are new to URI and want to launch a successful – inclusive and effective – teaching career at URI.

Writing Challenge for Tenure & Promotion

ATL Conversations

ATL Conversations are designed to ignite interest and discussion among faculty and staff from across campus about teaching and learning. Each conversation combines brief presentations with active discussion and exploration of a topic.

Special Events

ATL hosts large events for the university community to share information and ideas of importance. Thought leaders are brought to campus for speaking engagements, often supplemented with book clubs, seminars, and/or conversations.
