Scholarships

Most scholarship and loan opportunities for incoming students are available through the admissions and financial aid process. The scholarships listed below are for more advanced students.

NOAA Ernest Hollings Scholarship

This nationally competitive, two-year scholarship–which includes a paid summer internship at a NOAA laboratory–is for students with majors in any marine-related discipline and GPA’s greater than 3.0 who have career intentions that relate to NOAA’s mission.  URI students have been consistently competitive in the Hollings Scholarship; since 2005 a total of 32 students in Marine Biology, Aquaculture and Fisheries Technology, Marine Affairs and Ocean Engineering have received the prestigious scholarship.

It is strongly recommended that applicants consult with Kathleen Maher as they develop the essay required for the Hollings application. Marine Biology students should contact Jacqueline Webb.

Goldwater Scholarship

Awarded to sophomores and juniors who have outstanding potential and intend to pursue research careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering (up to $7,500 per year). Maximum of 4 nominees per year per institution.

Goldwater Campus Nomination

Udall Scholarship

Awarded to sophomores and juniors for leadership, public service, and commitment to issues related to the environment or to American Indian nations ($7,000). Maximum of 4 nominees each (1. Environment and 2. American Indian) per year per institution.

The Women Divers Hall of Fame (www.wdhof.org) is a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring and raising awareness of the contributions of outstanding women divers. Marine Aquarium Societies of North America offers a $2500 scholarship for a full-time undergraduate who will be seeking a degree in a marine science field. Selection will be based upon the student academic history and the student contributions and demonstrated commitment to the marine aquarium hobby.  See:
