March 18-22, 2018 – Great showing at the spring 2018 ACS meeting in NOLA! Nasim Ganji, Timo Kuester, Akram Abassi, and Animesh Pan presented their work. Geoff Bothun gave invited talk showcasing the groups work in the session “Recent Advances in Particulate and Colloid Materials for Biomedical Application.”
January 8, 2018 – Nasim Ganji’s paper “Surface activity of poly(ethylene glycol)-coated silver nanoparticles in the presence of a lipid monolayer” accepted in Langmuir.
August 15, 2017 – Bothun and lab embark on a new collaboration: NIEHS funds URI-led Superfund on fluorinated pollutants (poly- and per-fluoroalkylated substances).
May 9, 2017 – Akram Abbasi publishes her first article in Langmuir! “Near Infrared Responsive Gold-Layersome Nanoshells.”

December 14, 2016 – Collaborative work with Nasim Ganji, Iftheker Khan, Aihong Xi, and Chris Bobba accepted to Langmuir ” Anionic and cationic silver nanoparticle binding restructures net-anionic PC/PG monolayers with saturated or unsaturated lipids.”
July 14, 2016 – Yaser Kashcooli successfully defends his M.S. thesis “NIR Light Activated Hollow Gold Nanoshell Structures Based on Layersome Template.”
July 1, 2016 – Bothun named RI NSF EPSCoR Director and Principle Investigator.
April 13, 2016 – Dr. Matthew Priess successfully defends his Ph.D. dissertation “Lipid-Nanoparticle Interactions and Mechanisms.”
November 13, 2015 – Bothun and colleagues receive new 3-year grant from GOMRI – “Molecular Engineering of Food-Grade Dispersants as Highly Efficient and Safe Materials for the Treatment of Oil Spills.” This is a collaborative project with Srini Raghavan (U. Maryland), Vijay John (Tulane), and Alon McCormick (U. Minnesota).
November 9, 2015 – Michael Desmarais (BS/MS) wins 3rd place for this poster “Towards Water Disinfection using Silver Nanoparticle-Modified Ceramic Membranes” at the Annual AIChE meeting in Salt Lake City.
July 15, 2015 – Bothun and collaborator Carmen Scholz (UAH) receive NSF grant – “UNS: Collaborative Research: Biodiesel-derived butanol: Lipid vesicle mediated extraction enables continuous fermentation processes.”
June 8, 2015 – Former PhD student and post-doc Anju Gupta joins the Chemical Engineering faculty at Rochester Institute of Technology. Congratulations Anju!
May 16, 2015 – Sarah Fields and Max Sender receive their M.S. degrees at commencement (making it official) – congratulations!
April 12, 2015 – Collaborative work with Prof. Dave Worthen accepted for publication in AAPS PharmSciTech: Malekar et al. “Radiofrequency-activated nanoliposomes for controlled combination drug delivery.”
March 13, 2015 – Undergraduate researcher John Neilsen wins 1st place for his poster “Lecithin/Tween 80 as Alternative Oil Dispersants” at the Northeast student regional AIChE meeting. John also won 2nd place in the environmental division for a related poster at the 2014 annual AIChE meeting in Atlanta.
March 1, 2015 – Bothun, Arijit Bose (Chemical Engineering), and Mindy Levine (Chemistry) were featured in the inaugural issue of URI’s new research magazine “Momentum” for their work on novel technologies to treat oil spills.
February 2015 – Bothun and Yanjing Chen publish collaborative work with Dr. Stephanie Wunder’s group at Temple on “Effect of Lamellarity and Size on Calorimetric Phase Transitions in Single Component Phosphatidylcholine Vesicles” in BBA Biomembranes.
January 2015 – Bothun and Vinka Craver (Civil & Environmental Engineering) offer their course EGR 450X: Nano Tools for a second time! This course is funded through the NSF Nanotechnology Undergraduate Education (NUE) program.
