The ITR Internship Program serves as a method for students to earn academic credit for internships at the University of Rhode Island.
-
- Provides academic credit for quality internship experiences in virtually any field
-
Students may participate in paid or unpaid internships for academic credit anywhere in the US
- Students can search for new opportunities or apply directly to open positions in Handshake
- Students are assigned to a Career Education Specialist (CES) based on career cluster/major who can guide students in their search for an internship
Students should wait to apply to the ITR Internship Program once they’ve increased their GPA above a 2.0 and/or have completed 60 credits at URI. For students that are only a few credits short of 60 earned credits, reach out to your Career Education Specialist to discuss eligibility. These requests will be approved on a case-by-case basis.
The ITR Internship Program is made of two courses:
ITR is the three letter course code for the Internship Program. All students will enroll in 2 separate sets of credit: ITR 302 (field experience) and ITR 304 (online seminar). Students are required to complete both sets of credit in the same semester.
ITR 302
Field experience credit (the hours you’re working at your internship). The number of credits you can earn range from 3 to 12, based on the number of hours you complete in your internship. See the table below for a breakdown of credits and hours.

The Basics
The Basics:
Students seeking academic credit for an internship are required to enroll in two sections of ITR: ITR 302 & ITR 304. ITR is the three letter course code for the Internship Program.
ITR credit satisfies 300 level free electives. Free electives are separate from major requirements and general education courses. Students are encouraged to meet with their academic advisor if they aren’t sure how many free elective credits they have. To connect with them through an email or meeting, visit your Starfish Success Network.
ITR Internship credit is just like any other class credit. When enrolling in ITR credits, students should keep in mind the other credits they will enroll in to not exceed the maximum amount of credits for the semester (19 credits maximum for the Fall/Spring semesters).
All students will enroll in 2 separate sets of credit: ITR 302 (field experience) and ITR 304 (online seminar). Students are required to complete both sets of credit in the same semester.
Examples
Fall/Spring
Students that have accepted an internship and will be working 22 hours a week should plan on enrolling in:
- 8 credits of ITR 302
- 3 credits of ITR 304
Total = 11 credits of ITR
ITR 304 is 3 credits and is a letter grade, which will impact students GPA.
This student might need to drop other courses they were originally planning on completing to make room for 11 credits of ITR. As a reminder, all students can take up to 19 credits in the Fall/Spring semesters and 16 credits in the Summer.
Example: Summer
Students that have accepted an internship and will be working 18 hours a week should plan on enrolling in:
5 credits of ITR 302
3 credits of ITR 304
Total = 8 credits of ITR
This student might need to drop other courses they were originally planning on completing to make room for 8 credits of ITR. As a reminder, all students can take up to 16 credits in the Summer.
ITR 304 Brightspace Professional Development Seminar Course:
The Brightspace professional development seminar course is designed to assist students in reflecting on their internship experience. Students are enrolled with classmates that are also completing an internship. The lesson plans are designed to help students process through their experiences and provide support in a cohort model.
Each week you’ll complete a new interactive lesson in Brightspace focused on success in your internship and how to leverage the internship experience in future interviews and throughout your career.. Some of the topics in the course include: interviewing, resume, networking, job search, and a career readiness plan.
The class is held asynchronously online through Brightspace with a course instructor that is a Career Education Specialist. Holding the class through Brightspace allows students to prioritize their internship schedule and provides the ability to complete an internship outside of Rhode Island.
