A Focused Review of Medications for Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder

Overview

While stimulants are first-line treatment for ADHD, many patients may benefit from alternative treatment options given age, comorbidities, and personal preference. Pharmacists have the opportunity to educate patients and providers on these alternative treatments.

Target Audience

Pharmacists in all practice settings.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, pharmacists will be able to:

  • Analyze the clinical presentation and diagnostic criteria for ADHD
  • Differentiate between formulations of stimulant medications
  • Outline alternatives to traditional stimulant medications for ADHD
  • Evaluate appropriate pharmacologic treatment for ADHD in special populations
  • Develop appropriate monitoring parameters for medications used in ADHD
  • Summarize common adverse effects of medications used in ADHD

Evaluation

All participants will have the opportunity to review the educational sessions and speakers and to identify future educational needs.

Caralyn Granato, PharmD
PGY1 Pharmacy Resident – VA Providence Healthcare System

Dr. Caralyn Granato is a PGY-1 Pharmacy Resident at the Veterans Affairs Providence Healthcare System (VAPHS) and is a 2021 graduate from the University of Rhode Island. She will be continuing her training at VAPHS in psychiatric pharmacy starting in July of 2022.

 

Aaron Perfetto, PharmD
PGY1 Pharmacy resident – VA Providence Healthcare System

Dr. Aaron Perfetto is a PGY-1 Pharmacy Resident at the Veterans Affairs Providence Healthcare System, where he will be continuing his post-graduate training as a PGY-2 Ambulatory Care Resident. He received his Doctor of Pharmacy at the University of Rhode Island in 2021.

Requirements for Credit

Completion of the online modules and program evaluations are required to earn credit. No partial credit is available for this program. Evaluations must be completed at www.uripharmacycpd.org within 60 days.

 The University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.
