Living off campus is an exciting step in your college experience. It can give you more independence, more space, and new opportunities to build community. It also means making decisions about housing, money, leases, roommates, and the responsibilities that come with renting.

You don’t have to figure it all out at once. Start with the guidance you need, use URI’s resources, and take your next step with confidence.

Your Guide to Living Off Campus

From choosing a rental to moving out at the end of your lease, each stage comes with different questions. These five guides can help you make informed decisions, understand your responsibilities, and prepare for what’s ahead.

Not sure where to start? Follow your housing journey

Living off campus involves several connected steps. You may not need every resource today, but knowing the sequence can help you plan ahead.

Step 1: Plan your budget and find a home

Decide what you can afford, identify your must-haves, compare listings, and consider how you’ll get to campus.

Step 2: Review your lease

Understand the costs, dates, rules, and responsibilities before signing a rental agreement.

Step 3: Plan how you’ll live together

If you have roommates, agree on expenses, chores, guests, quiet hours, and shared spaces before moving in.

Step 4: Move in prepared

Document the property’s condition, arrange services, save your records, and learn how to report maintenance problems.

Step 5: Communicate and stay organized

Keep up with payments, follow your lease, communicate with your landlord, and prepare for move-out before the lease ends.

Make off-campus living part of your URI experience

Living off campus doesn’t mean disconnecting from campus life. URI encourages commuter and off-campus students to stay engaged with university resources, events, student organizations, and the wider Rhody community.

Make time for the things that help you feel connected:

  • Get involved in student organizations, campus events, and activities.
  • Build relationships with your roommates and neighbors.
  • Plan your schedule so you can balance classes, work, commuting, and downtime.
  • Know where to find university support when you have questions.
  • Be a respectful neighbor and understand the local rules that apply where you live.

Your home is where you recharge, but your college experience extends beyond its front door.
