Biography

Nilton Gomes is in his fourth year in the English Ph.D. program. Nilton was born in Fogo, Cabo Verde, having emigrated to the United States when he was six years old. His family moved to Massachusetts where he attended Bridgewater State University (BSU). He holds a BA in English and a BS in Elementary Education from BSU. Later, he earned his MA in English from BSU, where he was given an honorary thesis award for his master’s thesis titled, “Ineffable Beauty: Kantian Precepts in the Great Odes of John Keats” which was directed by Jadwiga Smith. Now his work focuses on the body as a system of meaning in the eighteenth-century novel and stage. Nilton is also deeply interested in philosophies of post-structuralism.

Before attending URI, Nilton lived in Manchester, England while attending the University of Manchester and studying under Professor Jeremy Tambling.

In addition to teaching at URI, Nilton has taught classes in composition and in literature at his alma mater BSU, at Wheelock College (Boston, MA), and at Massasoit Community College (Brockton, MA).
